The Sound of Blackbirds

We like to talk about music--mostly of the folk and acoustic variety--from our home bases in Urbana, Illinois; South Hadley, Massachusetts; Minneapolis, Minnesota; New York, New York; and Portland, Oregon. The name of the blog comes from a lyric written by Tracy Grammer, from her song "The Verdant Mile."

Who We Are

From June 1998 through May 2009, Matt Winters was the host of The Moonshine Show on WKCR-FM in New York City, a bluegrass and old-time radio program that has roots dating back to 1963. (From January 2002 through January 2007, he also was the co-host of Live from Miller Theatre, a program focusing on contemporary classical music.) He also was the manager of the Postcrypt Coffeehouse at Columbia University from June 1998 through May 2001. By day, Matt is a practicing political scientist, living in Urbana, Illinois.

Ellen Stanley lives in Minneapolis, where she promotes and enjoys music of all kinds. She is the Director of Publicity & Promotions for independent folk/roots label Red House Records, the host of weekly radio program Womenfolk on KFAI Community Radio and has contributed to METRO magazine. She also performs her own music under the name Mother Banjo. When not pretending to be a folk star, she likes to run, travel, watch movies and eat gourmet cheeses.

Jess Byers lives in Portland, OR where she runs Shining City Productions. She previously ran a concert series for the Missoula Folklore Society in Missoula, Montana, where she also hosted several radio shows (In Other Words and Morning Freeforms) on KUFM, Montana Public Radio. When she's not promoting music, she takes care of four amazing little girls, hangs out at the tea shop, and writes.
