At the first public appearance of a fledgling band called the Dead Weather, at the Bowery Ballroom on Tuesday night, all four members dressed in dark clothes. They made infernal blues language with big drums and vocal whines and used beautiful Gretsch guitars and keyboards to create noises like woofs and air-horn blares. It was an hour of unease with jumbo gestures, like discarded ideas from Led Zeppelin’s first album. Nobody onstage looked very happy.
